- Beadon's wish to extend his term as Lt-Governor of Bengal which Lawrence opposes because such posts are 'the great prizes of the services in India'; Maine has made similar request which Lawrence supports – Legal Member of Council, being appointed from home, does not deprive service of any prize, and such appointees become much more useful as they familiarise themselves with India; Maine has pointed out difficulties in appointing Ellis to Legislative Council; 'all is going on as well as I could expect throughout the land'.
