- Warns him to beware of financial scheming of entourage of recently deceased ex-Raja of Satara in particular of attempts by George Thompson (agitator against slavery in British colonies, and against coolies system, land tax, and opium and salt monopolies in India; member of British India Society in London, Ambassador of Emperor of Delhi, protagonist of ex-Raja of Satara) to preserve his pension from ex-Raja; reigning Raja in bad health; Hobhouse is determined that 'no adoption should be permitted' and that 'this petty Principality should be merged in the British Empire', and would like Dalhousie's 'opinion on the subject, and perhaps you would have the goodness to turn your attention to it'; requests Dalhousie's opinion on furlough regulations for civil service; despairs of reforming system for military furlough because of opposition from service; Lord Grey's sister has written on behalf of an artist, Mr Lewis.
