- After slow journey out was sworn in on 12 January, his predecessor Lord Hardinge departed on 18th; excellent reception given him by Mahomed Ali, Pasha of Egypt; latter's disregard for Muslim prejudices; suspicion that Aden fortifications being badly constructed; mistaken belief of Lord Tweeddale (outgoing Governor of Madras) that Govt had affronted him; has endorsed Hardinge's proposal to appoint Sir F Currie, rather than John Lawrence, as Resident at Lahore during absence of Henry Lawrence; has assumed Government of Bengal immediately (rather than continue Sir H Maddock's tenure as Deputy Governor) in order to learn his work thoroughly; distress among Calcutta merchants consequent on pressure in England will adversely affect revenue, especially opium; huge remittances of specie to England ordered by East India Company's Court of Directors; initial good impression of Govt officials; hopes to work harmoniously with his Council.
