- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
-
Annoyance caused Sir H Maddock by fact that on expiration of his 5 year term as Member of Council, his membership can be extended only on temporary basis pending receipt of orders from Court (of Directors); Turton case – Dalhousie will take criminal proceedings if investigation of his accounts shows there are good grounds; this the third case this year of an official's integrity being impeached and a 'cauterizing remedy' is needed 'in so rotten a state of things'; has asked Low to report on relations between Nizam of Hyderabad and his Diwan, and Nizam's heavy indebtedness; commercial credit slightly better, but not opium.
22 March: peaceful succession of new Minister at Gwalior and foiling of intrigue by Maharaja's mother (Byza Bhai); disposal of family and followers of ex-Raja of Satara; report that ex-Raja of Satara wishes to send his daughter to England to be educated as a Christian – possibility of missionary intervention being investigated, and child will not be sent pending instructions from home; also report that two Bikaner princes wish to visit England – 'these are curious movements in Hindoo minds and habits'.
