- Has been confined to bed 3-6 July; is told sickness due simply to unusually hot weather; Currie, inconsistently with his earlier advice, now advises that British troops can be moved to Multan despite season of year, which impairs Dalhousie's confidence in him; distance makes it very inadvisable for Indian Govt to reverse decisions of men on the spot; if original advice supplied to Govt was correct, believes Edwardes should not have been allowed to invest Multan; Bombay Govt have still sent no minute on Satara but meanwhile State is being administered by British officers; General Fraser (Resident at Hyderabad) has at last arrived for discussions – he is able and straightforward but impetuous and not very conciliatory, but Dalhousie will not allow him to act too precipitately; reference in his letter of 9 June to 'hanging up' Oudh and Hyderabad meant only that if possible a crisis must be avoided until settlement in north-west achieved.
