- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Turton's case; Hobhouse's strictures on integrity and morality of Calcutta [cf his letter of 23/24 May] are too well founded; members of the two services are without taint, but al Dalhousie can do regarding officers of Court and members of society is to exclude mis-doers from his house; possible effect of Hobhouse's orders for second remittance of £500,000; is practising rigid economy in every department; current economic situation makes it impossible to increase income or taxes; take-up of Govt loan improving as is opium price; on the other hand drought or excessive rain have had adverse effect on revenue; bullion is order off - £300,000 from Calcutta, £200,000 from Madras; still no minute on Satara from Bombay, but in fact the question is already settled: both Hobhouse and the Directors approve of 'allowing the Raj to lapse', its administration already in British hands, and only 'formalities of annexation' to be completed; financial provisions made or to be made for families and their attendants of ex-Raja and late Raja;
