- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Battle of Chilianwala (13 January) an incomplete victory over Sher Singh; gives highly critical account of Gough's conduct of battle, which involved heavy losses; some of cavalry disgraced itself, their flight only being halted in the Field Hospital by the Chaplain Mr Whiting who, 'pistol in hand, declared he would shoot the first man who passed him!'; whole army has lost confidence in Gough, and so has Dalhousie; fears disaster may befall army in Gough's hands but has no public facts on which to base his removal; once Sikhs are beyond Jhelum, Dalhousie can order Gough to remain with his headquarters in rear; in meantime, Dalhousie continues to support him in public, but now wishes to state truth privately, and will make it public should defence of his own reputation require it; briefly reviews events elsewhere including progress of siege of Multan (on 30 Dec its magazine exploded, on 2 Jan the city was carried by assault, citadel continued to hold out but has probably fallen by now); Dost Muhammad has not crossed Indus; at some risk is sending Gough reinforcement of another brigade, and troops at Multan ordered to join him as rapidly as possible when they are set free; Maharaja of Nepal's hunting party to Terai border accompanied by 6,000 men and 41 guns; has not had time for much conversation with Henry Lawrence who resumes charge of Lahore Residency on 1 Feb; Dalhousie will obey orders of Secret Committee so far as possible; death of King of Delhi's eldest son an event which 'should be taken advantage of'; award of CB-ships should await end of campaign.
