- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letter of 7 March, 'the substance and the tone of which have deeply pained me'; defends position taken in his letter of 22 January on question of Gough's continuance in office; vehemently denies he has ever in private correspondence complained either that Gough was continued against his remonstrance, or of lack of Government support; denies Hobhouse's 'offensive insinuation' that he has communicated with his political associates, or has been preparing a case to be used against his employers; expresses regret if wording of his letter of 22 January gave a false impression or was intemperate, or if (recollecting treatment of Lord Auckland and also of his own father) he was too hasty in saying he would defend his reputation; even if guilty of such errors (which he does not admit) would not deserve 'harsh terms in which you have addressed me, and the unjust and injurious imputations which, as my official superior, you have thought yourself justified in throwing out against me'; as he has learnt from Russell that Hobhouse showed him Dalhousie's earlier letter, asks that this should also be shown to him.
