- Acknowledge's Hobhouse's letter of 1-4 August; Henry Lawrence's pro-Sikh predilections led Dalhousie to insist that all measures except those of 'the merest detail' be submitted to him; Lawrence's dislike of having colleagues, and even greater dislike of Board's subordination to Dalhousie which he has made very evident to others; John Lawrence is less of a Sikh and Charles Mansel (the third Board member) not one at all; Lawrence's plan to recruit 100 Gurkhas on which he failed to consult Dalhousie who has ordered him to desist and rebuked him; comments adversely on Frere's proceedings regarding Satara; Punjab still quiet and troops healthy; flood damage to Multan citadel; Napier's prejudices against civil and in favour of military government in Sind and Punjab are 'unhappily bitter and credulous' and Dalhousie now listens to them less; Dalhousie intends to see things for himself in southern Punjab and Sind; Dalhousie has refused to support Cunningham's memorial for restoration but adds that his conduct of political affairs in Sind was laudable.
