- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letters of 23 September and 3 October; glad Hobhouse approves of treatment of Mulraj; thanks for explanation of difficulty regarding Punjab medal; regarding Delhi succession, will not needlessly shock sentiment which exists among British rather than Indians in favour of 'fallen House of Timoor'; Napier is to inspect magazine at Delhi; his strongly worded despatches not best calculated to smooth Court of Directors into acquiescence with his wishes; uncertainty regarding his plans; Napier's belief that Maharaja of Kashmir has 400 pieces of artillery not confirmed by Henry Lawrence's personal observations or Dalhousie's other sources of information; Napier's belief that British were on the edge of a mine and that Punjab was in imminent danger is inconsistent with his recommendation (made in response to reported disaffection in 41st Native Infantry because of reduction in allowances) of giving furlough to 25 men per Company as per usual practice (but not granted this year because of state of affairs on frontier); in view of likelihood that Napier writes to correspondents in England with his claims, Dalhousie assures Hobhouse he remains vigilant; dubious character and motives of two men conjectured to be Napier's informants; is pleased at state of Punjab country he has so far seen; his health is improving rapidly.
