- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letter of 23 October; very pleased with all he has seen at Lahore; has endeavoured to show every courtesy to Maharaja and the Chiefs; his vexation that his sea trip would give wrong impression, and relief that improving health means he can turn it to public good - instead of going out from Karachi and back again, now intends to go to Bombay and then Singapore, visiting settlements in that quarter and looking in at Moulmein and Arakan, before landing at Calcutta where he proposes to remain for some time to settle railway business and to confer with Council on important legislation; he will then return to frontier where it is indispensable he should be for some time; everything quiet; seizure of (Sir) Joseph Hooker (botanist) and Dr Campbell (British representative in Sikkim) by Raja of Sikkim.
