- Duleep Singh's departure from Lahore; Napier's delay in leaving Lahore which has delayed work on cantonments as he wished to see sites before they were settled; action against Yusufzai villages; Sikkim affair; 41st NI no longer murmuring about reduction of allowances, but similar discontent has shown itself in 23rd NI; about 40 men refusing pay tried by drum-head court martial on the spot and sent in irons to work on roads; four men found inciting mutiny to be tried for their lives and Dalhousie favours death sentence as a deterrent; no other symptoms of mutiny; received Nawab of Bahawalpur at Multan to give him presents and compliments – 'a poor, chicken-hearted, broken debauchee. His heir is in prison – his intended heir (the second son) and his brother were there – two ill looking ruffians as I have yet seen'; flooding at Multan has caused dreadful sickness among troops; flourishing state of Sind Sagar Doab, Dera Ghazi Khan and Derajat and; any successor to Napier should be efficient and not simply chosen by seniority or favour – discipline and condition of Bengal Army demand all the ability and energy of the best soldier in the service.
