- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letters of 7 [i.e.6] and 24 [i.e. 23] January; is truly sorry at storm his proposal regarding Delhi succession has raised; is very sensible of Hobhouse's support in the matter, in return for it does not wish to cause him or Government further embarrassment in Parliament, and will therefore 'cheerfully acquiesce' in any modifications which Hobhouse may make after reference to Cabinet; if King dies in meantime, will neither abolish title nor insist on possession of palace, believing these measures to be expedient rather than indispensable; does not wish to be pigheaded, and hopes inconsistency of his changing course will not cause Board of Control or Court of Directors to lose confidence in his judgement; Napier has conferred importance on a foray near Peshawar by going needlessly in person; he always treats such plundering raids in the Punjab as wars, and chief necessity for Dalhousie's presence on frontier is to control Napier's 'manifest predetermination … that a war there must certainly be'; his health now better than any time since 1846.
