- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letter of 7 March; delay in despatch of Koh-i-noor; rumours about diamond have leaked out; dealt with a great deal of work during his stay at Calcutta; Bethune devoid of judgement but very able and useful, and has done excellent work in introducing female education on same basis as male [Bethune was also President of the Council of Education]; Dalhousie supports his request for Queen to become patroness of first school; offensive tone of Napier's memoranda for Secret Committee on Military Defence; has censured Napier for issuing an order for calculating compensation for sepoys' rations in Punjab at higher rate, without consultation with Govt, and for which he did not have authority; this has negated past six months' work of getting rid of extra allowances, and for the moment cannot be reversed as feeling is too feverish; is vexed at action of Col (later Sir) W H Sleeman (Resident at Lucknow) in ordering out troops to coerce a zamindar for King of Oudh, losing some men and guns in the process.
