- On recommendation of (Sir) George Lawrence has reverted to system of paying Afridis Rs 6,000 to police frontier, hostages being taken from them (Lawrence thinks their submission real); relations with Napier; Napier's General Order on Courts Martial is making a stir – Dalhousie hopes both Birch (Judge Advocate General) and the Advocate General at Calcutta whose professional opinion was mutilated in the Order will avoid a crash; John Lawrence has been with him (at Simla) for 10 days and gives encouraging account of Punjab; Henry Lawrence very ill and is going with his wife to Ladakh; ugly gathering of 6/700 sikhs near Allahabad hoping to rescue Sirdars imprisoned there.
