- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Hobhouse
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letter of 7 June; is very pleased and relieved to find Hobhouse takes similar view of Napier's proceedings as himself; further comments on Napier; clash over Napier's order regarding courts martial has been avoided, Napier in practice not apparently insisting on his point; suicide of Col King (commander of 14th Dragoons) resulting from actions of Napier; controversy regarding Sind prize money overpaid to Napier and other officers due to gross negligence of civil authorities; has good reason to think Napier has sent his resignation only to War Office and not to Court of Directors, in hope that it will go no further; Dalhousie sincerely hopes Home Govt and Court will not allow this manoeuvre to succeed – Dalhousie states formally that for last ten months Napier 'has been an obstruction to my administration rather than an aid to it' and his presence at the head of the army a source of anxiety rather than confidence – 'if he is continued, he shall [double underlining] obey me' but grudging obedience cannot be beneficial to public interest; ill treatment of Medea at Mauritius; ill feeling at Bombay between Governor (Lord Falkland) and (Sir) J Willoughby; rains late in upper India but have now begun – very important that they should be good in Punjab.
