- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letter of 24 July; suspects Napier of double dealing over his resignation; by now Hobhouse will have received Napier's memorandum and Dalhousie's minute [cf Dalhousie's letters of 26 May and 14 June] and Dalhousie assumes home authorities will either treat Napier's memorandum as a resignation or recall him; will postpone sending home Napier's most recent memorandum mentioned in letter of 25 August until he knows how home authorities have acted, and will write less strongly on it than he will, if, through lack of formal resignation letter, Napier; comments on Macleod; agrees that even Governor-General in Council cannot alter pay of troops in India without reference to Court of Directors; allocation of batta; everything remains quiet.
