- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letter of 7 September; Napier is refusing to repay Sind prize money overpaid to him and threatening to go to law, but Dalhousie will take it out of his pay if necessary; Afridis have made submission this time apparently in good earnest; though they cannot be trusted, submission must in prudence be accepted – hopes they have now learnt their lesson; rumoured insurrection of waziris apparently a minor scuffle in the mines; John Lawrence has been very ill which greatly frightened Dalhousie 'for he could not in all India be replaced in that particular position; Henry Lawrence has returned from Kashmir – Dalhousie wishes he would go to England 'or anywhere far off'; Hamilton/Harris controversy; Cunningham seems to be 'dying of disgrace'; Bethune; comments on Frere whom he thinks better employed in Satara than Sind; Sir Henry Pottinger (Governor of Madras) does not encourage communication and they hear little of that Presidency.
