- Still detained at Wazirabad by heavy (but auspicious) rains; describes meeting with Ghulab Singh and believes he has established good relations with him; Napier; tone of Sir W Gomm (new C-in-C, India) is most friendly and Dalhousie hopes for smooth relations; bombshell of Duleep Singh's declaration that he wishes to become a Christian and how to handle it; Satara pension; if Nizam fails to pay mounting debt to Govt of India (now 70,000 lakhs), Dalhousie intends to take possession of tracts of Berar to value of 35,000 lakhs, and to keep it to pay for Hyderabad Contingent which has never been properly paid for; cannot do without that sum at present and should not allow ourselves to be 'played with' by a man who is a fool, a sot and a rogue; refers to his letter of introduction for Grant – latter is Gough's son-in-law and can tell Hobhouse much of events since 1845 in which C-in-C has been concerned.
