- Acknowledges Hobhouse's letters of 24 November and 7 [sc 6] December; will facilitate Mackay's cotton enquiries which may do good – hopes Mackay has virtue of meekness 'for if he comes here with an air of authority or inquisition I shall snub him forthwith'; Falkland has appointed Frere as Commissioner of Sind; brief character sketch of Falkland; Henry Lawrence now thinks Afridis will never be 'quite right' until they have had a 'savage visitation from our troops' but agrees to try every recourse before 'war in the hills'; if he substituted single Commissioner for Punjab Board of Administration, post would have to go to Henry Lawrence as Dalhousie has no means of providing for him otherwise – wishes he had been appointed Military member of Supreme Council rather than Gilbert; in any case Board is producing excellent results in Punjab; Gomm 'is all acquiescence!'; thanks for Gilbert's baronetcy; encloses letter to Queen.
