- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Broughton
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Broughton's letter of 8 November; is glad to know Broughton agrees with him on objectionable nature of army memorial on Lahore booty; does not know whether it is only a proposal or has been sent home; those involved, or at least Thackwell, know that Dalhousie has seen it; raid by 4,000 or 5,000 Mohmands – Dalhousie doubts they will be quiet until strong expedition has been made into their hills; Hazara situation; military preparations being made in case Ali Murad resists; situation in Burma looks threatening, and blockade of Rangoon being mounted pending receipt of instructions from Broughton – Dalhousie considers British cannot afford to be worsted without losing face in India as a whole; Nizam is paying debt gradually; Barlow's report acquits Gubbins except for taking unnecessarily large sum in bail, and convicts Denison of calling someone "a forger and a cheat" in court and of having kept a man illegally in his compound for some days; Fraser reports debts owed to parsee merchants (Pestonjee &co) by Hyderabad Govt may be small or non-existent – Siraj-ul-Mulk (the Hyderabad Minister) intends to set up thorough investigation.
