- Title:
- Letter from Dalhousie to Broughton
- Scope & Content:
-
Refers to his postscript of 10 January; Burma situation; insult offered British naval negotiators by new Burmese Governor of Rangoon leading to retaliation by Commodore (later Rear Admiral Sir) G Lambert (naval commander sent with gunboat to negotiate) in excess of his instructions; Dalhousie has refrained from censuring Lambert very severely, as he is a naval officer of rank not under Dalhousie's orders in these seas (an anomaly which should be corrected); incident may perhaps have had salutary effect, and Dalhousie still hopes for an accommodation; Dalhousie is proceeding urgently to Calcutta; young officer has got himself killed in skirmish with Mohmands; army's prize memorial has not been dropped.
