- Refers to Broughton's letter of 8 January, and its unwelcome news that Broughton may soon quit office; negotiations with Burmese in which Dalhousie has taken 'the high tone, as the only one commanding a chance of success'; signs of American hopes of obtaining a footing in Burma are another important reason why British should not allow themselves to be driven out of Burma; Ali Murad (of Sind) – his people glad to be rid of him; Mohmands quiet again; lack of rainfall west of sutlej makes Dalhousie very uneasy about crops and revenue.
