- Acknowledges Dalhousie's letters of [2/]3 and 9 June; in light of latter, comments optimistically on probably limited extent of Punjab rebellion; soldiers at home (Napier, Wellington, Sir Henry Lawrence) all consider only very small force will be needed to put it down, but Dalhousie right to provide for campaign of some sort, and right to avoid premature military expense; Secret Committee, on advice from Lawrence and Napier, ask Dalhousie to reconsider necessity of moving troops from Bombay; Dalhousie right to decline Nepalese offer of assistance; Currie wrong to write desponding private letters; approves Dalhousie's intention to exact indemnification from Sikh Durbar for Multan affair; has declined Henry Lawrence's offer to return at once to Punjab, but will be happy to see him there when Currie's year is out; Gough to be continued as C-in-C for now; Wellington and Lord John Russell want Napier to succeed him as would Hobhouse but for prejudices of Directors; Hardinge and Irish situation.
