- Acknowledges Dalhousie's letter of 4 January; Sir George Napier declined appointment as C-in-C because of ill health, and Sir William Gomm (Governor and C-in-C, Mauritius) has been appointed instead; announcement to be managed to save Gough's feelings but many complaints heard as to his mismanagement; suggests Mulraj's life be spared – general impression at home that he has fought a good fight; agrees with Dalhousie that Dost Muhammad and his Afghans should be driven back to their own territories and not followed; Sir Charles Napier thinks Province of Peshawar should be retained by whoever has Lahore; approves Dalhousie's precautions to prevent Maharani's escape; Rawlinson; Henry Lawrence's influence with Sikh Sirdars may not be as powerful as Lord Hardinge claims but it should nevertheless be useful; Charles Napier's pamphlet on the Sind Camel Corps.
