- Title:
- Letter from Hobhouse to Dalhousie
- Scope & Content:
- Congratulations on battle of Gujrat, of which as yet they have few details; if casualties resulting from it prove heavy joy at home will be dampened; rewards for Whish and others; Wellington's magnanimous support for Gough; agrees that Dost Muhammad must be driven back within his own borders; would be pleased to receive the ears of this 'supreme scoundrel' whose conduct rules out any question of giving him trans-Indus Punjab; Dalhousie should understand from Secret Committee's letter of 24 November and Hobhouse's private letters that policy regarding future of Punjab must be settled at home – Russell (Prime Minister) said only yesterday 'he trusted there could be no mistake in that respect'; expects Dalhousie will send home relevant papers containing his advice as soon as war is over or even before; agrees with Dalhousie's policy on treatment of Mulraj, but hopes Henry Lawrence's suggestion to parade him at Multan and hang him at Lahore will not be followed – 'this would be conforming too closely to Oriental barbarity'; at first glance agrees with Dalhousie's despatch on Delhi sovereignty.
