Full news of battle of Gujrat arrived on 17th; there will be vote of thanks in both houses to Dalhousie and the Generals; Gough's letter of resignation has arrived; hopes of avoiding publicity over controversy between Gough and Dalhousie; problem of Indian officials writing home; condemns Henry Lawrence's advice regarding Maharani and tendency to assume independent power [cf Dalhousie's letter of 6 March 1849 (1)], and Dalhousie will be supported in exercising undivided power; Lawrence's fellow feeling for Sikh Sirdars must not interfere with Dalhousie's arrangements, and 'the complete subjection of the whole Sikh population' must be first priority.

Encloses vote of thanks – debate went off well; his difficulties in compiling blue book on war – has had to omit admirable despatch of Dalhousie's because it advocated annexation; Thompson has given notice of raising question of Punjab policy; he relies chiefly on 'good-for-nothing' book ['History of the Sikhs'] by Capt Joseph Cunningham (Political Agent at Bhopal); latter should be sacked if he has used secret documents; Carmichael-Smyth has publicly reprimanded for his volume [see Hobhouse's letter of 21 June 1848].
