- Title:
- Letter from Hobhouse to Dalhousie
- Scope & Content:
- Acknowledges Dalhousie's letter of 24 March; campaign now seems complete; even if Dost Muhammad escapes Afghans will have been taught useful lesson; has given Dalhousie's letter to Queen who will write; problem of honours and awards – it will be difficult to meet Gough's and Dalhousie's recommendations; does not understand Dalhousie's reference to disposal of Punjab – cannot believe he will act on his own responsibility without reference to home authorities; his own view on Punjab policy is close to Dalhousie's, but would like whatever latter does to secure full backing of Leadenhall St and Downing St; states opinion at home moving in favour of annexation but indicates how takeover in Punjab should be handled in immediate future; difficulty of getting Cabinets to consider great questions while Parliament is sitting which is why Dalhousie has received no opinion so far, but assures him he will receive clear instructions once he puts question to them formally; treatment of Mulraj, Sher Singh, and Maharani; notes that Kashmir troops made last minute appearance which will presumably save Ghulab Singh (who has not delivered annual shawl tribute) from 'a squeezing'; Queen has asked for some trophies for Windsor Castle; PS: honours; Cunningham; Wellington's long considered proposal for bridging Sutlej.
