- Refers to Dalhousie's letter of 20 April (1) and defends himself from Dalhousie's charge that he should have known of Dalhousie's lack of confidence in Gough; consulted Cabinet collectively, and some Cabinet members individually, on Dalhousie's letter of 22 January and on answer he should give, and received their approval of that answer [in his letter of 7 March]; hopes that events since then will have convinced Dalhousie that he did not intend to give offence; will refrain from remarking on some expressions in Dalhousie's letter [of 20 April] just received, especially as Dalhousie attributes expressions in 22 January letter to hastiness rather than distrust of Government; hopes this will be last as well as first difference between them and 'it shall not be my fault if this unfortunate controversy should ever again be alluded to during the remainder of our correspondence'.
