- Refers to Dalhousie's letter of 11 May; approves Dalhousie's handling of Gough; Hobhouse's speech at Napier's farewell dinner has been misreported, but that is 'the fate of all public men'; House of Lords debate initiated by Ellenborough on spoils of war, in which Government spokesmen were inadequate, and Wellington (though making 'handsome and generous defence for all of us' conceded on main question of batta; criticises Ellenborough's motives, and his failure to keep promise not to raise question of Koh-i-noor; question of medals will be troublesome; glad that Punjab State property was confiscated to Crown – Ellenborough wrong to argue that it is all booty which should go to troops; only question is whether by usage Queen should hand over some of it to troops; Dalhousie in the right in controversy with Bethune [see Dalhousie's letter of 5 May]; threatened with an Act compelling East India Company to make good Turton's defalcations which 'I need not say … will be stoutly opposed'.
