- Acknowledges Dalhousie's letters of 30 August, and 6, 7, 20, and 22 September; Napier says nothing about coming home in letter to Hobhouse; prize and batta - decision regarding allocation of former rests with Treasury, and Hobhouse's understanding of the question; Cunningham; thinks Indian newspapers 'beneath contempt', and referring to Henry Lawrence's request to defend himself from their imputations remarks that 'Indian servants are more sensitive than wise'; Indian officers will not value Indian medals if not allowed to wear them at Court; Dalhousie's health; Koh-i-noor; glad Dalhousie is consulting Court regarding Kashmir shawls; Frere's 'foolish sympathies'; Hume's request on behalf of ex-Rani of Satara for funeral expenses of ex-Raja; agrees entirely with Dalhousie regarding Sind on which he has had long letter from Napier; latter's complaint regarding Bombay Govt's treatment of his former Munshi appears groundless but Hobhouse reluctant to tell him so, 'at least not at once'.
