- Has been engaged in 'fierce struggle' with Court on Delhi question – nineteen out of 23 Directors opposed Dalhousie's proposals but Hobhouse supported him, cancelling their despatch and writing a short instruction to him to do as he proposed on death of present King; Court sent strong remonstrance and two Chairs have been pertinacious in trying to change his mindwith support of Mountstuart Elphinstone, Sir George Clerk, and Professor H H Wilson; Hobhouse has persisted and despatch he has proposed will be sent eventually; Directors supporting Dalhousie were Mangles, Hogg, Wightman and Caulfield; would help if Dalhousie could send some strong opinions supporting his view.
