- Acknowledges Dalhousie's letter of 22 November; Gough's letter on Punjab medal, having been entered on Court's consultations, was treated as official document; Welington and Russell advised Hobhouse to assent to Court's proposal to sanction bar for Chilianwala, but Hobhouse struck out reference to Gough's letter in despatch sanctioning he bar; does not share Napier's fears regarding Punjab – in this Hobhouse depends, not on 'good disposition and affection' of population, but on their conviction that further resistance is useless; Dalhousie's reaction to Napier quite right; annoyance at Napier's failure to make intentions clear regarding retirement, but if anything serious he could not and would not retire; after two very strong remonstrances Court has acquiesced on Delhi question on condition (which he accepted) that Hobhouse took all responsibility, so Dalhousie will receive despatch desiring him 'to put an end to the mock monarchy' on death of present King; Queen is willing to receive Nepalese Embassy.
