- Title:
- Letter from Hobhouse to Dalhousie
- Scope & Content:
- No letter of resignation yet received from Napier, though Ellenborough has received one stating a determination to resign, the ground given being the reprimand over Napier's unauthorised action over compensation; Dalhousie need not worry on this subject – his reprimand was 'certainly severe' but was called for – there cannot be two Governors-General; Hobhouse is doubtful whether even Governor-General in Council can alter pay and allowances without reference home; thinks even Ellenborough will not support Napier on this issue and feels certain Wellington will not; following complaint from Napier that Kohat despatch has not been published, it has been laid on table of House of Lords, but its appearance is unlikely to do him any good; Ellenborough is threatening discussion in Lords on extending number of troops entitled to batta for Punjab campaign – Hobhouse would almost rather give way than have such discussion take place; requests Dalhousie's formal opinion on whether Company's servants, civil or military, should be allowed to be Directors of Banks; has so far had little success on behalf of Mackeson and Ramsay; action on Afridis and salt mines approved; comments on Nepal Mission and Jung Bahadur – 'half caste Macleod' should not have accompanied him as private secretary.
