- Letter from Hobhouse to Dalhousie
- Scope & Content:
-
(This draft is struck through and marked cancelled)
Refers to Dalhousie's letters of 25 August and 4 September; complains of Napier's conduct; Russell and he 'pushed our authority over the Court to the extreme verge of legality, by insisting on his appointment'; Hobhouse anticipates no trouble from Gomm as he is not 'a man of genius'; Lt-Gen Sir John Grey (British Army) appointed C-in-C, Bombay – that appointment belongs 'exclusively' to War Office 'although I believe the General is some relation of our Colonial Secretary [i.e. Earl Grey]'; Bombay controversy; Dalhousie can do what he likes about Dost Muhammad, though Hobhouse would be glad never to see his name again – 'he is a present of Ellenborough's which is quite enough for me'.]
