- Encloses letter (not present) from Truro to Russell refuting allegation that he had colluded with Ellenborough in matter of army's memorial; given Truro's helpful record in combating Ellenborough's attacks, Broughton 'almost wonder[s]' Dalhousie should have believed such an accusation; impossible to conceive how Ellenborough will justify himself, should matter become public, but it was a very ingenious mode of attempting to cause quarrels within Govt circles; has not so far informed Wellington of misconduct of his officers; Dalhousie's letter of 8 October is satisfactory about everything; absurd rumour that fourth Presidency is to be created and seat of govt transferred to it; Broughton and Chairman of Company cannot agree on person proposed to succeed Bethune; is anxious to know something of Barlow's enquiry into Jotee Persaud case; everything at home is prosperous; preparations for Parliamentary Committee on India – request for statistics, especially as to establishments.
