- Cabinet reconstruction has not yet occurred; refers to Dalhousie's letter of 9 December; murder of Carne and Tapp, but Broughton strongly against a full scale punitive expedition – officers should understand that, if they get themselves through their own stupidity, their deaths will not be avenged; question of message to Duleep Singh about Sikh armour; has mentioned matter of slave trade to new Foreign Secretary; Falkland blames Grey for despatch of Jacob's report to Dalhousie without reproof [cf. Dalhousie's letter of 11 August]; Lt-Col (later Lt-Gen Sir James) Outram) 'a turbulent fellow' and may give trouble by going home and getting into the Company Direction to advocate his own cause [Outram, Resident at Baroda, had written a trenchant report on corruption in the State including expressions considered by the Bombay Govt to be disrespectful to itself and it had therefore removed him]; hopes to hear Nizam has settled his debt completely so that Dalhousie will have his hands free to deal with Oudh.
