- Acknowledges Vernon Smith's letter of 25 September; glad all agree on 1 March as date for his relief; is considering whether Tanjore should lapse following recent death of Raja; is sending opinions of Madras Govt and himself on title of Nawab of Carnatic and hopes Home authorities will put an end to 'this noxious remnant of a court'; King of Ava is very adverse to a treaty and plans to send d'Orgoni to Napoleon III hoping to recover portion of Pegu by his intercession – Dalhousie suggests Foreign Office should intervene with Napoleon; efforts will be made to accelerate production of Indian accounts, but unless there was some accident, those for year ending April 1854 (not just those for April 1853) were sent home in time for Vernon Smith's parliamentary statement; Santal situation unchanged; nothing more heard from Oudh.
