- Acknowledges Dalhousie's letter of 13 November; will consult with Clarendon (Foreign Secretary) about d'Orgoni; hopes Dalhousie will devise system for dealing with outbreaks such as Santal insurrection which has caused much wonder in England, and suggests establishment of police force; old India hands fear Oudh business will not be satisfied without bloodshed – Vernon Smith hopes King will be satisfied with ample pension; possibility that pretender to Oudh throne now living in Europe will put forward his pretensions; Indian accounts for year ending 1854 did not arrive in time for his parliamentary statement in May 1855.
