- Explains detention of King of Oudh and four of his suite in Fort William following deposition of sepoy who was twice tampered with by Muslim describing himself as coming from King's people; King's complicity unproven, but Canning thinks it essential to make it impossible for anyone to claim to speak in his name, or for his name to become a rallying point for disaffected soldiers; offers of enlistment have been made in his name; treatment being accorded to King.
