- Title:
- Letter from Canning to Vernon Smith
- Scope & Content:
- Capture of Delhi; no evidence of rebels escaping from Delhi having decided on a rallying point, but if they reinforce rebels in Oudh in large numbers, that could cause serious difficulty; Canning's disappointment that success at Lucknow is only partial; laments loss of Neill; emphasises success at Delhi was achieved by Army of N.W. Provinces and Punjab, not troops sent from England; importance of impressing Princes with 'sufficiency of our local forces, even against such terrible odds'; situation elsewhere; Assam quieted by contingent of 'sailors' from Calcutta – 'in reality the low blackguards of the port'; grateful for reinforcements and horses received from Sir George Grey (Governor of Cape Colony); has declined Grey's offer to take 10 doubtful sepoy regiments – Canning believes firm line should be drawn between those wholly trustworthy (of whom 'we shall want every man of them') and those unreliable which must be got rid of for ever; welcomes Vernon Smith's proposal [cf his letter of 26 August] to punish rebellious sepoys by transportation to colonies and discusses implications; loan is recovering its buoyancy; hopes to have (and needs) brief break.
