- Title:
- Letter from Mayo to Argyll
- Scope & Content:
- Persian Gulf now quiet; recent Turkish expedition caused him much anxiety but now seems clear that Turks are in difficulties and beginning to realise that invasion into interior of Nej is almost impossible; regarding recent attack on Gladstone about commercial member of Secretary of State's Council, Mayo has no objection to merchant members provided they act for the State and not themselves; but one of best and most influential of Manchester men has just written to a friend of Mayo's thus: "I begin to fear we are producing cotton goods faster than our Eastern consumers can buy, and pay for them and that we may before long have again to complain of bad trade and stir up the India Office for further changes" – in other words, when speculative trade leads to losses, HMG will be urged to help and 'the blacks' made to pay; successful visit by King of Siam.
