- General Sir Charles Egerton (member, Council of India) has fine opinion of Duff; he thinks Sir E Barrow excellent to replace him as Military Secretary, India Office; the other two names he mentioned were Sir A. Barrett and Sir M. Grover; Gaekwar's assertion that he had been told to dismiss officials against whom no definite charge was brought, merely a vague suspicion of disloyalty; Crewe did manage to talk to him about the people in Paris; Sir H Stephen, the Calcutta Judge, has urged importance of appointing an English barrister to the Bench, despite Harrington's vacancy being filled by an Indian - Crewe would like Hardinge's opinion on need for another British Judge; letter from a Mrs. Buchanan on the subject of the McCormick case and misunderstanding by Du Boulay of the expression "Burmese local administration"; will try to get the Council to agree to spending Rs. 10,000 for the clerical staff at New Delhi; his opinion of Maharaja of Nabha; P.S. has just heard from Holderness that Duff, in a confidential talk, spoke of Barrow or Scanlon as good successors.
