- Found Crewe's account of his conversation with the King of Spain interesting; doubts whether the revolutionaries will be able to bring about an uprising; does not believe the Ruling Chiefs, including Kapurthala, are discontented; Hardinge is due to see Kapurthala shortly; will be grateful if Crewe sends him details of the proceedings of the Gaekwar of Baroda and his A.D.C. during their stay in Paris; Hardinge would like to know the facts as he is sure the Gaekwar is going to complain to him about not being received by the King; is sure the creation of a High Court in Bihar will give great satisfaction in the new Province; Wood of the Railway Board has departed for home in a huff, but after accepting the £1,500 offered to him; fears the crash in the Native Swadeshi banks of the Punjab, which have branches all over India, will affect the poor population very badly; sending a telegram regarding a new treaty with the Maharaja of Mysore and the disabilities of Christians in Mysore; thinks he is going to have trouble with the Maharaja of Nabha, who refuses to have anything to do with Sir Michael O'Dwyer Lt-Governor of Punjab); British India districts adjoining the Maharaja's State are being flooded with bad spirits and opium; Hardinge is willing to talk things over in a friendly manner but the Maharaja refuses to have any communication with anybody or to answer official letters.
