- Scope & Content:
- Increasing interest of the Indian public in the working and management of Indian railways; large number of railway questions asked at the recent Legislative Council meeting; strong feeling among Indians that the Government should take a more prominent part in the running and management of Indian railways; Hardinge feels these questions will be embarrassing to himself and Crewe because they are based on reasonable grounds; Boards of Directors of some railway lines against Government control, and claim to be quite independent and under no obligation to the Government in any way; encloses for Crewe's information, case of a driver on the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway, which illustrates the attitude the companies have taken up; P.S. - has received a letter from a collector at Tanjore about a railway dispute in his District and expressing his feelings about the Railway companies.
