- Thinks there will be no difficulty in finding a suitable successor to Swinton among Indian architects; hopes that when Baker and Lutyens arrive in India, they will do some serious work, as there is a feeling that they have not done much while they have been away; failure of rains now becoming a serious problem; not happy about proposals for retaliation against Japan in connection with the Indian coasting trade, though he agrees that Japan is making a serious attempt to capture the trade; approaching end of Simla season; will be starting his autumn tour in a few days time; hopes there will be an opportunity to explain to (Sir) Lionel Abrahams (Assistant Under-Secretary, India Office) Government of India's views on financial and railway matters; still a lot of Muslim agitation due to the Cawnpore mosque incident; hopes to find a compromise which will be acceptable to all the parties, provided the Muslims are reasonable.
