- Received Crewe's despatch regarding the Indian Railway Companies; Abrahams currently in Delhi; Hardinge has already had a long talk with him and found him a clever and agreeable person; hopes to have an informal Conference with Abrahams and those Heads of Departments interested in railways; would like Crewe to ask Sir David Barr (formerly Indian Political Department, member, Council of India) if there is any truth in rumour that not everything went off satisfactorily when the King received Maharaja Holkar; the Maharaja's forthcomnig second marriage to a low-caste woman from Bombay; understands from the Resident in Baroda that the Gaekwar intends to return to Europe in the spring; encloses notes on persons whom the Gaekwar saw in Paris; Crewe's proposal that the Auditor-General should be appointed by the Governor-General with the approval of the Secretary of State; disturbances between Hindus and Muslims in Agra; surprised at statements in the English press that Hardinge intends to resign due to ill-health or a possible appointment in the Diplomatic Service; assures Crewe that he intends to finish his full term and that he is in excellent health; South Africa.
