- Congratulates Crewe on his speech to the Indian deputation; accepts Crewe's criticism of his speech at Madras in the spirit it was offered, and agrees the incorrectness of addressing Gladstone directly; however, he is informed that under the Indian Emigration Act the Governor-General in Council may correspond directly with the authorities in Natal in respect of the protection afforded to emigrants in their Colony; selection of Sir Benjamin Robertson (Indian Civil Service) to represent India informally at South African Commission of Enquiry into position of Indians in South Africa; worried by the attitude assumed by Indians in Natal; discusses problem generally; Crewe's speech on Scotsmen and India; capture of the four anarchists and their bomb making factory; accepts that excessive precautions had to be taken for his safety in Calcutta; the English community of Calcutta in a more reasonable frame of mind; Aga Khan worried about Indians in Zanzibar, if it were to be handed over to the Germans.
