- Back in Delhi; whilst in Calcutta, he received a deputation from the temperance movement and is enclosing copy of speech he made to them; precautions taken by the police for his protection in Calcutta; his ADCs won the Championship of India polo tournament; has received the project estimate for new Delhi which he encloses; also encloses copies of telegrams between himself and Gokhale regarding the situation in South Africa, and copies of a letter from Robertson and Hardinge's reply to him on the same subject; letter in the Times by Sir W Ridgeway misquoting Hardinge's speech in Madras; Abrahams staying with Hardinge at the moment; would like Crewe to write to Lord Derby, Patron of Wellington College, asking for admission as a day pupil for the Maharaja of Bharatpur; P. S. has verified the point regarding the Viceroy's right to correspond directly with the authorities in South Africa.
