The collection includes a copy of the Public letter received from India, No.20 of 1866, dated 27 Mar 1866.
The ships concerned were Athletœ, Clarence, Earl Russell, Golden South, Ganges, Fusilier, and Newcastle.
The report concluded that the mortality was largely due to a fatal and infectious fever of a remittent type, possibly typhus, brought on board the ships by the emigrants at Calcutta. The report includes a description of fever as it appeared in the Agra Central Prison in 1860; and statements of emigrants shipped from Bengal during the years 1860 to 1865 to the West Indies (British Guiana or Demerara), Mauritius, West Indies (Trinidad), and Reunion.
